zombish

was the first major project i ever worked on, and i still hold it nearly to me as a memory of when i would actually do things

origins

i remember making a simple zombie game demo one day and it was pretty fun, the game was simple and big numbers or just big effects in general always were satisfying and the game scratched that itch perfectly, i remember packaging the project into html and sending it to my friend and that was that for a while

(see below the very first version of zombish)

i then deleted all my old files

and the .sb3 for zombish was deleted on accident, to which i was unaware

until i was bored one day and remembered the game and wanted to actually finish it because it was pretty fun, i then realized all i had left was the html version of the game, so all i could do was play and realize that i had just made the biggest mistake of my middle schooler life

and that’s the entire story of zombish

until

i found a tool that could turn the .html back into an editable .sb3, and i was ecstatic to say the least

it was a bit janky and i had to clean up the messed up sprites, but i had the game back and i quickly got back to work

i worked on the game and added new zombies, powerups, classes, and a bunch of new things

i got feedback from my friends, and everyday after school i would mostly play xbox but every now and then i worked on the game and updated menus and fixed bugs until the game was finished and ready for release

zombish released with 5 classes, 3 zombies, 1 boss, and no skins or cosmetics or anything to work towards

zombish released and made a total of $0 because the game was free and i also didn’t market it at all or anything and all i did was upload the release trailer and then the game came out

other than that, the release was perfect. aside from the fact that after dying or beating the final boss you couldn’t start a new run without restarting your game and i didnt fix it until a day later because there were no players or playtesters

v1.1

v1.1 was the first big update, it added:

  • the shop
  • 2 gamemodes
  • 5 skins (4 buyable, 1 after winning once)
  • the stats menu
  • the small fast zombie
  • new powerups
  • and coins

the game was actually playable now, and it was sorta kinda fun

the game was still very new, i don’t have an exact date, but i remember 1.1 came out only a couple days after release, and i was having tons of fun adding whatever after all the boring stuff was dealt with already, so much fun that only a couple days later 1.2 came out

something interesting to see when looking back thru the files was the achievements i never added, there’s many achievements with custom trophies all designed and even a template for a special “shadow” achievement type which were gonna be stupid goals that were impossible or whatever like the cookie clicker shadow achievements, these never ended up being added, the sprites are only in v1.1 and v1.2

v1.2

starting at v1.2, i started writing changelogs on itch.io which save the date they were released, which lets me know v1.2 came out june 16th 2023, it added:

  • 3 alien zombies
  • alien boss
  • 4 new skins (+1 secret skin)
  • medal in class select screen when you’ve won with that class
  • and thats kinda it

you know i always imagined that every updated kept getting bigger and bigger but that kinda is lame compared to 1.1, theres the first secret and thats kinda the only cool thing

but worry not because 2 days later v1.2.1 came out which is just some bug fixes

but 2 days later v1.3 came out and that was actually cool

v1.3

v1.3 is actually cool as it adds the first new class since release, the exploder!! everything added is:

  • exploder class
  • mutant zombie
  • credits menu
  • more stats
  • way better select character menu
  • and some other small things

i was clearly having a ton of fun working on this game and adding whatever cool thing entered my mind

i also remember making a wiki on fandom at this time, i finished around 2-3 articles before getting extremely bored because writing is for fools

a day later there was update v1.3.1 which is just some balance changes for exploder, plasmancer, and pyromaniac, it also added the .sb3 file available for download, and this was the only update available to be downloaded

v1.4

v1.4 was the longest wait between updates yet, but it was still just 19 days after v1.3.1 released

this update was the biggest yet, adding:

  • cyborg class
  • custom backgrounds (4 buyable, 1 golden, and 2 secret)
  • new secret skin
  • new robo-zombie
  • new boss: The Z0Mb13
  • saving and loading projects
  • new logo and menu
  • and more

this was the start of the zombish golden ages, i remember after this update me and my friends started adding stupid things and always talking about zombish with my friends, i remember setting up a discord server and making a highscores channel and posting highscores with my friends and whatever

this was also the update that made the game not free, at first i wanted to make it only cost $.75, but itch.io had a minimum order fee of $1 so i made it $1 then raised it to $1.50 in update v1.5

5 days later there was also v1.4.1 which was just more bugfixes

a whole month after v1.4 was the biggest zombish update ever, v1.5, it adds:

  • new final boss: alien queen
  • new class: fighter
  • 5 new skins
  • 3 new bgs
  • updated every menu
  • so many balance changes
  • and more

okay i lied this was the golden age of zombish, making this update and shortly after it released was so much fun becuase i remember having all my friends play it and just having a blast talking about and making zombish, it was super fun in general

the end

after continusly working on zombish and its updates for a while, i got super burnt out from working on the game. this was a weird time in my life because i was going to public school for the first time in a while, i fell out with many of the friends i had played and made zombish with, and a whole heap of other things that made me just want to take a break and rest for a while

a while back i started work on a v1.6, but all that i made are some seasonal changes like snow and a santa zombie in december and some small things like skins. i may come back to finish that sometime in the future but idk

i’ve started work on many smaller projects since then, but i always get bored or distracted and i just feel like i cant focus on creative works for more than an hour now. i think zombish was the last thing i made that made me creatively happy, so i hold it in a very special place in my heart

the game is sorta boring tho i’ve never been good at game design
